What do you libertarians think of the campus protests?
So I’m somewhat of a libertarian and/or anarchist. In many ways I see libertarianism as grown up anarchism. I admire libertarians for putting principles before parties and think yall are less susceptible to group think, have a BS detector, and take a nuanced approach to issues that are founded in individual autonomy. Compared to libs you don’t switch from hating cops to loving cops when the news cycle changes. There’s many more examples I can give of similar phenomena.
Now with the campus protests what’s your take? FIRE has been working overtime so protesters and palestine supporters don’t have their speech rights trampled. I first saw FIRE in ads of Liberty magazine back in high-school. I thought I might have to contact them with a complaint years later, when a prof thought it was okay to let students call me a bigot in class but I couldn’t continue to hit back on anything identity related, not involving insults but using their identities to argue that their takes are too personal.
My generation of the campus left, despite my agreement on certain issues was that they genuinely thought speech was violence and often wanted to shut down speech. They hated being mansplained to about issues relevant the coursework in class. They wanted speech codes and safe spaces. FIRE is a pro first amendment education focused nonprofit and my prof was trying to disallow me from attending class but got overruled by my dept chair.
I still support the rights of the protesters to say whatever they want, as long as it’s 1A protected speech, and not face unjust actions from administrators and the police.
Although these protests are being led by the same types of people that really bugged me in school.
So I bring this question to yall. I see the protesters as peaceably assembling their institutions for a redress of grievances but also know the leadership within the protests could have some boneheads rising through the ranks of these student orgs
