On Awakening a Sleeping Giant
In the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora! Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto famously said, after he directed the Japanese naval attack on Pearl Harbor, “I’m afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.” While there is no evidence that Yamamoto ever actually spoke these words in real life, they remain entrenched in World War II folklore.
Fast forward to 2024 and a much different America. If the November 5 election proved anything, it’s that America is not Martha’s Vinyard, or the Hamptons, or Washington, D.C. Nor is it Oprah, Beyonce, or Taylor Swift. America is East Palestine, Asheville, and Springfield. America is the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker. Fortunately for Republicans, the Party of Hate and Hysteria (a.k.a. the Democrat Party) still does not understand this. Worse, Democrats have no clue that over the past 16 years they, like the Japanese in 1941, have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.
