Deaths in 2023 in the USA by selected causes, guns and drug overdose.
Cause of Death (Est. Deaths 2023) OD Synthetic Opioids (fentanyl) 74,702 OD Psychostimulants (incl. meth.) 36,251 OD Cocaine 29,918 OD Natural/semi-synthetic 10,171 Gun violence 18,874 OD = overdose Sources: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2024/20240515.htm https://www.thetrace.org/2023/12/data-gun-violence-deaths-america/ Because libertarians are for drug legalization, many even without changing welfare first, I am curious about your take on this. The reason I am curious is because we have an election coming up and the party which wants to take away your guns, seeks to do so to fix the gun violence problem (they claim) which kills few, 19,000 in 2023, while the party which wants to take away drugs kills more than 5 times as many 108,000. Clearly something (guns) which contributes to far fewer deaths than drugs is far less of a problem, not to mention the constitution. I know you aren’t going to like it when I tell you I tend to vote Republican for this very reason. Democrats are freaking weird, they have serious problems with math, science, and logic. While they will legalize drugs, they ask me to pay for the problems drug addiction creates and it kills far more people than guns, they also want to confiscate our guns, which contribute to the deaths of few. I already know most libertarian idealists will say get rid of all of the asinine laws and I would enthusiastically agree and vote for that but we all know that isn’t going to happen while Democrats continue to use welfare and it’s function of wealth redistribution as their main electoral selling point. While I know the parties are little different, there are in fact differences. I am wondering, if you consider yourself to be a libertarian and you plan to vote Democrat, how do you rationalize this obvious problem? submitted by /u/DustyCleaness [link] [comments]
