To all the communists, progressives, or otherwise left-wingers. Libertarianism is RIGHT WING and it always has been.
One thing that a lot of lefties like to say is that “Libertarianism was originally a left-wing term”. They will use this to say that actually THEY are the ones who are pro-freedom, whilst advocating to take away your property rights.
While it is a popular myth among the left, it is just that: a myth. Libertarianism, both the term and the ideals that construct the ideology, originated in the right, and hold distinctly right-wing values.
When “libertarian” was originally used in the left context, it was done specifically to refer to Anarchism, by French Communist Joseph Déjacque when he wrote to the mutualist Pierre-Hoseph Proudhon. So “Libertarianism” as an ideology didn’t start out as left, the term was just a cute nickname for anarchists. However, this was in 1857. Going further back, the first ever use of the term “libertarian” was in 1789, when William Belsham, a member of the British Whig party wrote about libertarianism. The British Whig party embodies the same ideals as what you would call a “right-libertarian” today, defending private property, constitutionalism, and individualism.
However, we can go back EVEN FURTHER to the ideals of classical liberalism, another right wing ideology. All the ideals that are known as “right-libertarian” were originally known as Liberalism, but during the 40s when the term “Liberal” became associated with FDR after the New Deal, the term became known as Classical Liberalism, to differentiate themselves from the FDR Democrats, and then Libertarian again to emphasize the belief in liberty. And Classical Liberalism has it’s origins all the way back in Ancient Greece and Ancient Israel. So “Libertarianism” never originated with the left. The right created it, the left stole it, then the left stole Liberalism, so the right stole Libertarianism back.
I know this probably won’t get a great reception on this sub, because it’s been taken over by commies and progressives, but just know that leftism and libertarianism are fundamentally at odds with one another. Quit pretending otherwise
