Countries Are More Than Economies
Much of the libertarian-conservative divide is due to the former viewing countries as merely economies and the latter viewing them as having an identity that transcends the economy. There is a distinct AmericanNESS. You can pick an American out of a crowd abroad, and it’s not by their waist line. Americans, generally, are confident, happy, friendly, creative, and wealthy (relative to the rest of the world). We classically possess an entrepreneurial mindset and have that well-known “American grit.” This American personality is something that must be nurtured lest it be lost. It won’t survive limitless immigration. Open borders, even in the absence of a welfare state, would destroy America in that it would dilute our distinct American quality beyond recognition. Change my mind.
