Conservatives used to tell me I was throwing away my vote. Now the Liberals who complained about it are doing the same.
Four years ago I voted in my first election. I was excited because I finally able to express my political belief in voting for who I thought was the right candidate.
I grew up in a traditionally Christian/republican household. I was so indoctrinated that I nearly cried when my mom joked that she’d voted for Obama in 2007 (I was in 7th grade). However, come high school I was exposed to different views, ideas, beliefs, and creeds. I eventually found myself agreeing with more liberal ideas. Now, of course I’ve understood for 6 years now that gay rights and drug legalization is certainly a libertarian view as well.
Fast forward to the 2015 election. I was (and still am) in college, and I felt pressured from both sides as I’m pretty sure all libertarians do, but I was pretty set on Gary Johnson. He wasn’t the perfect candidate in my opinion, and I’m not here to discuss his policy. The point is, he was the candidate I had chosen.
I visited home shortly before the election. We discussed politics, of course. And one thing lead to another, my father expressed that I was throwing away my vote if I didn’t vote for Donald Trump. He said that all the liberals will vote for Clinton, but not all conservatives will vote for Trump. If I don’t want Hillary, which I didn’t, then I should vote for Trump or I’d be throwing my vote away. I didn’t want either of them, but I will admit I would take Trump over Hillary.
I still voted for Gary Johnson.
Now, I’m considering Jo Jorgensen. Again, not here to discuss her policies, but now the roles have reversed. I constantly see on my Facebook feed where liberals share posts that basically say something to these effects: “All conservatives will vote for Trump, so if you don’t vote Biden you’re throwing away your vote.” Or, “This isn’t the year to vote 3rd party. If you vote 3rd party, that means you don’t care about minorities over your political ideals.”
It’s complete hypocrisy.
What’s the funniest thing to me is this: I am a filmmaker. At my university the film degree is under a bachelor of communication. I have taken so many classes on communication: com theory, mass com, global com, etc. And I’m fairly certain that the people making these memes aren’t actually liberals, or at least not the ones you know. They are made by elitists who simply want to maintain a two party system and continue partisan fighting. They make these type of memes to keep 3rd party candidates form rising. And then they shove them down the throats of those so desperate to be woke out of fear of being rejected and chastised from the community. These people are so caught up in mob mentality that they share these memes with no original thought of their own.
They can’t see the active hypocrisy or the actual threat that this kind mentality presents.
Next election cycle there will be another reason why you shouldn’t vote 3rd party. And the extremists on whatever side it’s pushed will eat it up.
Anyway, that’s just a small observation I’ve made over the past few years.
Liberals are now doing the same thing Conservatives did last election in that they tell you you’re waisting your vote if you vote 3rd party.
