Thoughts on prison labor?
I think it is acceptable to the extent that it helps fulfill labor demands in the facility and/or help cover the costs of their incarceration. But when it involves work for private companies and a cut for the state, the profit for the state per inmate should not exceed the incremental cost of incarceration per inmate, to avoid creating a financial incentive for incarcerating people. I would also additionally say that: Prison labor should be voluntary, not forced, although I suspect many inmates would do it voluntarily for commissary money and simply to relieve boredom. Prisons themselves should not be privately run. And more broadly, I think the legal system should move away from incarceration in both directions: towards the death penalty for more serious, violent, crimes, and non-custodial sentences and victim compensation for less severe crimes. submitted by /u/obese_tank [link] [comments]
