Sales people are bad for the economy
I would argue sales people, specifically those on commission, are bad for the economy.
A good sales person gets more people on average to buy something they otherwise wouldn’t.
It isn’t coercive but social pressure does influence consumer behavior. Pushy sales people use social accommodation to their advantage.
You can obviously say just say no. But if it affects average consumer behavior it distorts rational economic choices. Even if you’re only paying a little extra, the opportunity cost takes you from purchasing a good or services that would satisfy or satiate your needs. These choices are made in more of a clear state of mind without sales people.
