Victory in Vanderburgh! Evansville City Council votes to abolish bicycle registration
The city council of Evansville voted last night to get rid of a local ordinance that requires bikers to pay an annual licensing fee, something our local party had a hand in. Hopefully this is the first of many ordinances we can help reduce.
The Libertarian Party of Vanderburgh County has a committee to reduce city ordinances, tasked with finding outdated and unjust local laws. Of those laws, we planned to bring them forward to our city and county council and advocate their repeal. The bike ordinance has been on our radar for a while. Most people don’t know about it, including many city officials. But given how many people of lower income rely on bikes for transportation, this is disproportionately a tax on the poor.
Check out the article here. Unfortunately, they don’t mention us by name. However, if anyone were to reach out to the city council members, they would be able to verify our role in bringing the ordinance to their attention.
