What should be done about mental health?
I think this mainly goes out to the “taxation is theft” folks but the rest of you fake libertarians can chime in too (we all know you will). . . . . . Jk about the “fake libertarians” thing. We all know anarchists are the real libertarians.
If you’ve spent any time at all on Reddit, more specfically subreddits like /r/PublicFreakout (or any time at all in public) you may have noticed a vast amount of people who might benefit from therpay and/or medication. I know I do. Some of you probably do to.
But the issue with problems like mental health is that sick people are usually vulnerable and rarely well off. So although treatment may be available, it’s likely expensive, and therefore out of reach.
Another issue is that there isn’t really an overt profit incentive to help those in need of these services. I think we can agree the homeless guy shouting at pigeons under the overpass probably isn’t going to be able to finance his own recovery any time soon.
I’d like to dismiss one argument off the bat: live and let live.
Let’s assume we’re all rational compassionate people, and also acknowledge that we would like to live in a society that functions likewise. Letting the poor, sick and vulnerable die because it doesn’t personally affect us is cruel. Not to mention, from a practical, financial and societal standpoint, not fixing the problem is far costlier than fixing it.
So, what is there to be done? Anything? Nothing? Why?
