I think people have the wrong idea about the spirit of libertarianism.
The biggest thing I hear from the left about libertarians is that we’re a bunch of republicans in disguise. We are not. While we do hold values that overlay with the republicans we do not support their cause. We desire a separation of church and state. We want to govern our own morality. Many of us couldn’t give a single fuck if you’re gay, black, Mexican or Asian so long as you’re a decent person and don’t infringe on our constitutional rights. Many of us even support said communities and those who don’t honestly don’t give a fuck about you one way or the other.
The other thing I hear a lot is people of the right saying we’re morality policing shills but we’re not. Many of us just want every American to have the same rights regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race or age and those of us who don’t actively support it don’t really care one way or the other what or who you are as long as you’re not a dick.
A true libertarian is a little selfish, a real libertarian is a tad ego centric, and the best libertarians would lay down their lives to protect yours and their rights not because they particularly agree with your stance, religion or life choices but Because they understand it’s your god damn choice in this great country of ours to do what the fuck you want if you ain’t hurting anybody but yourself. You want to buy a truck mounted LMG go for it, your buddy John wants to marry his friend mike? We don’t give a fuck. You want to grow marijuana in your backyard and sell it to dispensaries, it ain’t my cup of tea but god damn anyone should they tell you no.
Edit: u/coldfriction pointed out that I make libertarianism seem far more liberal than it is. I had forgotten to mention that we see the second amendment as un-negotiatable. Many of us believe that all taxation is theft and although many of us support LGBTQ, BLM, and women’s rights, we firmly believe in the freedom of speech even if what is said is offensive. Most importantly we believe in the power of the free market. Most, if not all problems with government programs can be fixed by making companies fight for our money.
