Solitary confinement/non violent ‘crimes’
I just need to vent about this and I’m sure you guys will get it. My brother is locked up for relapsing on drugs right now. He wasn’t driving under the influence or robbing people for money. He works hard, pays his bills, and keeps to himself, but he has addiction problems. I’m not going to lie, I am frustrated that he hasn’t been successful in stopping using mainly because of his health, but also because of the way the state treats addicts. He was on probation for his possession charges, and relapsed. Now he is in jail, in solitary confinement withdrawing from opiates. He gets out of his cell for 45 minutes per day to shower and use the phone. He hasn’t been allowed outside, and hasn’t seen the sky for a week. Supposedly this solitary confinement is to prevent spread of Covid, and the earliest it will possibly end is after 3 weeks. I mean the LEAST they can do is give these guys a cell mate who isn’t positive. They could keep them in solitary for a few days and then pair them with someone. They shouldn’t even be there for non-violent drug offenses. He hasn’t received any info from his Probation officer about when he’ll get out and be sent to treatment. They won’t give him books or pencils or paper. He’s requested a bible to have anything to read to keep sane, and hasn’t gotten it. I can hear him cracking up on the phone and it’s so upsetting that there’s nothing I can do. You hurt yourself, and what does the state do? They subject you to a form of torture known to drive people mad. I’m so frustrated right now.
