First Time Voter Here Voting for Jo Jorgensen. Here’s why.
Before I begin to explain my reasoning for voting Jo, I wanna preface that I’m a 20 year old male and this will be my first time ever participating in an election. I thought that by making this post and addressing my perspective, I might be able to offer some valuable insight for other people on this subreddit to understand where the youth of today stands on politics and what ultimately led an impressionable young man like myself to come to this conclusion. Here’s how I see it:
At the end of the day, the 2020 election has been a monolithic failure on both sides. Even if you strip away the bigotry of Donald Trump, you realize that he completely sold out and became the very thing he campaigned against. He’s just another corrupt liar, only difference being that he fails to hide it. In a well-rounded ideal election, Trump would be toast. Unfortunately we live in the year 2020 where politics has become a reality show. There has been a lot to unpack in these past four years, but what baffles me more than anything about this election is how the Democrats have responded. The Democrats had four years to get it together, unite our divided country, and above all else, stand up to the egotistical maniac we have in office right now. And what they did do? They wasted valuable campaigning time on an attempt to impeach him. They threw away multiple reasonably promising Democratic candidates and put forward the most cognitively impaired political candidate this country has seen in modern times. To top it off, their nominee selected a running mate who, in a debate, said to his face that she believes his sexual assault victims and said “I said that because we were in a debate” when reasonably confronted by it. Yeah, not a very good look for us after the #MeToo movement.
I don’t think I’m in minority when I say that I dislike Donald Trump. He is a megalomaniacal bigot who continues to damage our country’s social credibility and that should not go unnoticed, regardless of your agenda. However, what the Democrats have done in this election cycle is a failure the likes of which I have never seen before in politics nor could I have ever predicted. It is genuinely impressive how horribly they’ve run this thing. I don’t know who is going to win the election, but the outcome isn’t the point. The point is that I genuinely do not recognize these clowns anymore. Week after week, they continuously show that they have not learned a single thing since 2016. As somebody who at one point considered themselves both a Democrat AND a Republican, I’m happily giving up both titles for good. It is genuinely embarrassing for me to proudly and openly align a single one of my principles with any of these blatantly ignorant liars anymore.
In regards to my generation, one thing I’ve come to realize in this election cycle is how over-represented we are in the media. My honest belief is that the youth of today are more Libertarian than I think they realize and especially more Libertarian than the media would like us to believe. Young people are guided by peer pressure. They don’t always have any real political ideology, values, or virtues that matter to them. They have the tendency to go along with what they believe is popular because their biggest fear is rejection. The media prays upon this fear at every single turn and the worst part of it all is that it keeps working. At this point, the media is doing whatever they can to stay relevant and the honest truth is that lots of people our age, even if they don’t admit it, are starting to realize how fake it is.
I’m certainly not the first to admit that the electoral college has its shortcomings, but in my state of California, I feel that I can use it to my advantage here and vote for Jo Jorgensen. I realize that by saying this on this subreddit seems kind of silly and redundant, but I feel that I need to say it because I’ve gotten nothing but constant hate from people my age for feeling this way. Will my vote save America? No. Is it possible that she won’t get 5% of the popular vote or receive federal funding for 2024? Yes. Will I sleep better at night knowing that I put my faith in a candidate who isn’t trying to radicalize both ends of the political spectrum and discourage people from having civil conversation? That’s the goal.
Thank you all for supporting Jo. No matter how they make you feel, just know that there are people out there who understand. Thank you all for reading and God bless America.
TL;DR: American politics are a joke and I’m tired of pretending to align my principles with these corrupt politicians, even if it means going against public opinion.
