Libertarianism is not a type of government or economic system. It is a mentality that places individual freedom and liberty over all other values.
Now, libertarians may disagree on how to preserve that individual freedom and liberty, but the ways you achieve that are not what “Libertarianism” is about.
Here’s what I mean. If you have an active government which creates tons of red tape which stifles anyone’s ability to have their voice heard, you diminish individual freedom and liberty. This is because your ability to stop your rights from being infringed gets buried under the red tape and policies. For example… what happened to Rome, what happened to the UN, and what happened to the US.
BUT if you have a 100% lassie faire government which doesn’t do anything to actively protect individual liberty, it will be unable to defend and protect its citizens from non-governmental sources from threatening the good of the people. For example… Nevil Chamberlain’s response to Hitler, or the US government’s lassie faire reaction to stock speculation before the Great Depression… or literally what happened to the US.
My point is this: Libertarianism is not a type of government, it is not an economic system. Unbridled Capitalism will not solve our issues just like it didn’t for those in the industrial age. Unbridled Communism will not solve our issues just like it didn’t for those in the USSR. Our issues will only be solved when we acknowledge that our #1 focus has to be on protecting individual liberty over all.
Instead of saying “Is this a capitalist idea or a socialist idea?” or “Is this a big government idea or a small government idea?” ask yourself “Does this idea protect my personal freedom and liberty?” If so, at least give the idea a run through in your head and see if it works for you.
[Edit] The reason I included the US as lassie faire is because real change and policies are almost impossible to achieve which inherently creates lassie faire for the good of the people, while having an active government that gives bailouts to corporations. We are both 100% lassie faire to preserving individual freedom and liberty here in the US while also being 100% for corporate bailouts and corruption in every office. Basically, here in the US we’re fucked.
