Libertarians and newspapers/media
I was thinking about something the other day and wanted to see what Libertarian’s thought about this. Would you support a national mandate that would require news outlets to disclose who they donate to? I imagine that in a newspaper, it would be required to include a page that says who they have donated to. Websites would be required to have a page listing their donations.
Obviously, this would be related to politics. And I think some way to properly identify what is actually considered a news outlet. A small youtube channel wouldn’t be required to disclose this, but companies like CNN, Fox, MSNBC and such would obviously require this.
I feel like this could be important as it would give people an opportunity to help determine how bias a company is and force them to take a grain of salt with every story.
For example, news paper places a scathing report on Biden that is based on anonymous sources. However, in the donations page it lists that the paper has donated 2 Million Dollars to the Campaign to Re-elect Donald Trump. I thought about even listing people who have donated to the site, but that to me gets kind of hairy. Would it be fair to list Nancy Pelosi as a major donator, but protect the freedom of speech of non-politcal figures. For example, your neighbor donates $10 to an outlet. Their information shouldn’t be printed. Maybe place a threshold of $250,000? Honestly, I don’t even know if people donate to the news.
Basically, my thought is this. Media is so biased, either towards the right or the left. There remains very few politically neutral sources. I feel like disclosing this info would inform the reader that this outlet supports a certain candidate or political party exclusively. But I know as a Libertarian, we generally disapprove of added regulations.
Looking forward on thoughts on this.
