Serious discussion please. How is rioting, burning down building and looting making a positive difference in creating equality in America?
Full disclosure, I think systemic racism exists in the U.S. and racial inequality exists and we have a lot of work to do. I’ve participated in a few protest in my local town and in Atlanta.
I grew up and live in a very conservative area. A few months ago, I was surprised but encouraged by the number of people around me listening and asking really good questions about racial inequality. For about a month, it seemed like the needle was moving in the right direction.
Then the rioting started happening. At first I was like, well I don’t like it, but people are upset. I’ll let it slide. Then, it has just kept getting worse.
Here’s the part I want to emphasize. Now with all the rioting, burning buildings, looting, etc, many of the people that were listening and becoming sympathetic, are starting to shut down. I’m so downhearted because I was starting to see actual change in my community. It’s still happening but nowhere near what we had a few months ago.
Edit: I’m breaking my own rules. I’ve subbed here for a lot time and limited my discussions to libertarian topics. So I’m going out in a limb here and being a bit vulnerable. I know libertarians don’t have a great track record of standing behind racial injustices but think I can care about my personal freedom and those of others that may not have the same freedoms.
