Americans Worry COVID-19 Vaccine Approval Is Politicized, Reports Poll
“We are delivering lifesaving therapies, and will produce a vaccine BEFORE the end of the year, or maybe even sooner!,” declared President Trump in his Republican Party nomination acceptance speech last week. What might the president mean by “even sooner”? On August 22 Trump not-too-subtlely tweeted, “The deep state, or whoever, over at the FDA is making it very difficult for drug companies to get people in order to test the vaccines and therapeutics. Obviously, they are hoping to delay the answer until after November 3rd. Must focus on speed, and saving lives!” He tagged Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Stephen Hahn in that tweet.
According to new results from the Harris Poll and the invaluable health news STAT website, the majority of Americans are concerned that the FDA may conjure an “October Surprise” by rushing the approval of at least one COVID-19 vaccine before the election in an effort to boost the president’s chances
