Good description of a libertarian
I often hear a lot of non-libertarians asking whats the difference between a conservative and a libertarian and the more I think about it, this is the best way to describe it:
Conservatives want to use the power of government to conserve some sort of traditional state order, while progressives want to use the power of government to drag society forward.
Its a constant tug of war match between which side controls the government at a given moment, while libertarians just want the government to have less power altogether . This way, society can move forward at an organic and genuine pace without being pulled one way or the other by the government. This is why society is so divided at the moment, there has never been an organization in the history of the world as large as the United States federal government making each election so crucial as to which side gets power. Us libertarians are the only ones with a unifying message to basically say to each side, if we go directly to the source and shrink the power of government, everyone could live amongst each other peacefully despite their differences without the influence of government, one way or the other.
