A helpless Europe?
In the conversation about US aid to the Ukraine, and the larger NATO sphere in general, I’ve heard a lot of rhetoric about how if the US pulled out or stopped sending aid to the Ukraine that Europe would suddenly be in danger and that Russia would start invading all of their neighbors.
It seems incredibly insulting to Europeans to say that without US intervention and protection that they’d be helpless to defend themselves. As if the European Union or a greater European alliance would be utterly incapable of stopping Russia from doing whatever they want.
I speculate that it is simply easier to have the US support defense in the region than to take on that logistical, strategic, and financial burden for themselves. I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you live in Europe right now. Is Europe truly so dependent on US protection?
