Azov Batallion Post Ukrainian War?
Ok, this might be a bit of a rant but hear me out.
TLDR; Is handing over weapons to units like Azov smart? Will they cede power after the war? What does an armed unit like this do post-war with their beliefs and the leader of Ukraine?
I think it’s safe to say that the last time the United States gave a country a shitload of weapons to fend off the Russians, it didn’t end so well. Now, one of the strongest military units receiving a rather large chunk of the weapons being sent over is the controversial Azov Battalion. They have mentioned how some of their soldiers identify as actual Nazis (somewhere between 20%) which seems rather high lol. In my personal opinion, I think it is larger than that, by how much, I don’t know.
I do think that their recent victories in Ukraine have bolstered the numbers of patriotic Ukrainians who want to fight for their country which is honorable. I don’t believe that most of the new recruits are joining because of their Nazi beliefs. But, who can say for sure?
Here comes the speculation… If by some miracle the Ukrainians fend off the Russians and take their country back it will find itself in an extremely unstable position. Not even equating outside forces meddling in affairs, they will have a tumultuous time ahead of them. I find it very hard to believe that some of the more radical groups just handed over their military power to the state without issue. Especially a unit like Azov has found itself in a very strong position. Especially to a president with Jewish ancestry.
I am by no means saying that the entire Ukrainian country is Nazi but a small group of people with a lot of guns and military experience can easily take over a country. History has shown us this time and again.
