1/3rd of Americans needs a license to work. 1/3rd have a criminal record.
It is no wonder the US has a labor shortage. American governments have had laws preventing people to work for decades.
1/3rd of Americans needs a labor license in order to work. That number was only 1 in 20 in the 1950s. So many of these labor licenses are merely there to prevent competition, prevent people from changing states, and funnel money into schools and unions. It just doesn’t make sense for a barber to require 1500 hours in education in California.
1/3rd of Americans also have criminal records. Aggressive arresting and convicting of people has resulted in one third of Americans having a criminal record and 0.7% of all Americans being currently incarcerated. Even something like a petty shoplifting charge can prevent someone from working for the rest of their life. The US has 25% of the world’s prison population when we only have 5% of the world’s population.
There really is no way out of labor shortages like this. If there were a formula in order to prevent people from working; requiring 1/3rd of the people to get licenses, and then arresting and convicting another third of the population is the way to do it. The US probably will lose to China and the Asian world when our governments have had such anti-work-entry policies for decades.
