Why do we still allow FISA, the Patriot Act, and the Freedom Act to exist; when they’ve proven to be ineffective at thwarting domestic terror incidents?
I’m sure the bulk of us have been vocal in the past about the violating nature of the aforementioned security acts.
But it seems that any vitrole disappeared when most Americans were led to believe the Patriot act had ended in entirety in 2020, when three sunset provisions failed to renew. When in reality the majority of the Patriot act had it’s sunset protections removed and said sections were made permanent in 2006.
But what was the point?
The FBI certainly had it’s full authority to act on the tips it received in 2018 against Cruz, but chose to delegate a potential terrorist event to the local sheriff.
The NSA, CIA, FBI, etc aren’t required to get a warrant to request individual internet correspondence/browsing history/search history etc as long as it’s in regards to a potential terror plot.
The same organizations also frequently deliver ‘keyword warrants’ which do not target a specific individual but coerce private institutions to turn over any end user data that met the parameters.
Don’t get me wrong I’m proud to see sections 206 & 215, alongside the “lone-wolf” non-direct terror cell provisions failed to renew in 2020. I just want to know why we’ve allowed the other provisions to violate our protected rights, if the government has proven itself time and time again that it is to inept to handle the responsibility.
Tldr; the gross powers given to agencies should have prevented the majority of the American terror events since 9/11. But instead they’re used to illegally spy on Americans and rarely used for potential terror events.
I could link sources but I’m on mobile, and it’s a pain.
