Has Technology made Representative Democracy Obsolete

Been thinking about this a lot lately. Given the technological advances of the last 20 years, do we really still need to elect officials to represent us? What is stopping the United States from becoming a direct democracy, such as Switzerland? This way I don’t have to rely on some schmuck to decide the outcomes of policies. I can just vote on it myself.
