We need to Talk about the Anti-Drunk Driving Tech Requirement for New Vehicles
I recently became aware that congress and the President are on track to mandate technology, the nature of which has yet to be determined, to prevent drunk driving in all new vehicles by 2026. Is it just me, or is that just about the strangest and most batshit insane thing any branch of government has done in the last twenty or more years? It reminds me of the smart guns section of Biden’s website during his campaign.
Is the goal to just create some kind of forced high tech bubble boy reality where every mundane task requires fingerprint authentication, heat camera surveillance and a IT guy on site in the likely event of user error or a system crash? Is the thought of people dying, which they are more likely to do because of their eating and exercise habits than as the result of a drunk driver or firearm accident, so unthinkable that forcing hastily designed tech on the population is a better alternative than simply accepting that death is a part of life?
Meanwhile I’m paying about $4/gallon to fill up the 23 year-old ticking time bomb I bought off Craigslist to work and back, keeping my fingers crossed until my catastrophic health coverage provided by my employer kicks in in 60-90 days. Assuming I can afford a new car in 2026 it’ll probably call the cops on my sleep deprived ass because my eyes are looking awfully glassy after that 10 hour overnight shift. But yes, by all means, try to invent a way to stop people from being dumbasses and fix all that infrastructure crumbling around us. Really doing us working people a fucking solid.
