Yeah, purity testing is cool and all
But can we get serious about winning some elections?
Look, it’s great that you think that the government shouldn’t stop people from discriminating against other people; that an individual should have the right to secede from the country at any time for any reason; that it isn’t the government’s place to tell people not to drive drunk with no brakes on their car. You do you. My only problem with that is that extremist stuff like this isn’t what attracts voters to a platform. Honestly, the average voter looks at the LP booing Gary Johnson over driver’s licenses and cringes. If we want to get serious about enacting anti-authoritarian policies and making *real* change, we need to build a big tent and stop the purity testing that drives us to ever more extreme policies to prove what real libertarians we are. We need to stop telling people cringy shit about libertarianism and start telling them how we can help them and protect them from the government by ending mass surveillance programs, taking a big hammer to zoning boards that keep housing supply artificially tight, pruning the power of the executive branch, supporting gun rights, and paring back the ability of law enforcement to run pell-mell over people’s rights.
Right now, we’re a fucking joke; people think of the LP and see Vermin Supreme. Sure, that’s great and all, but if we want to actually start affecting policy, we need to do better than that. We need to make a platform that’s attractive and inclusive to moderates, and in a way that they can see how libertarian policy can help them in a world where the Democrats and GOP have done gone and lost their minds. Maybe we can circle back to 100% of the stuff on the Libertarian wishlist once we’ve built up something resembling a real base of support. If we want to get there, there’s harder work than bitching on Reddit in front of us, and it’s going to involve moderation, compassion, and patience.
The libertarian party has a page specifically to help people interested in running for office. You don’t have to go big; start small, run for a local board or a mayoral office, try for the county board of supervisors, run for a seat at the state legislature. The LP wants to help you out, let them. https://my.lp.org/run-for-office/
