Lost a friend debating vaccine mandates. Is this how bad the divide has become?
Full conversation thread here
Summary: Person I’m debating believes the government has the right to forcibly vaccinate any and everyone without restrictions because they are selfishly prolonging the pandemic. I think the pandemic is being prolonged by unhealthy people and the government has failed to emphasize health and nutrition as a means of virus deterrence. The convo ended with her calling me fatphobic and ableist.
Background info: We are both college educated working professionals of an Af-Am background. That’s important to the conversation as the person i’m debating is well aware of our people’s history with the American medical system, including the forced sterilizations that went on well into the 1930s. We usually agree on the causes of many societal issues and only tend to disagree on the solutions. This time, she went off the deep end. Full on Statist government bootlicker. It was genuinely frightening. She works as a legal aide in a local politicians office. I pray she never lands in a position of power.
Before this interaction I described myself as a libertarian-leaning liberal who tends to vote blue in (most) elections. My former friend is a progressive democrat. This conversation has pushed me firmly in the Libertarian camp. I refuse to support anyone this deep into fascist thinking. Thoughts?
