Gwen Berry hypocrisy
As we probably know by now, an Olympic athlete named Gwen Berry chose to look away during the national anthem after finishing third in her event. While she denies that she was disrespecting America, she has also claimed in a previous interview that she doesn’t think the anthem stands for her, and she also held up a shirt saying “Activist Athlete”. Which makes her actions look intentional.
While many people discourage that kind of behavior, I’m also seeing a lot of hypocrisy from both sides about the incident. I am a Republican actually, but I cannot find any community to have a conversation with, without getting downvoted into oblivion or laughed at in person.
From the Republican side, it’s the whole “cancel culture” thing. We stand against cancel culture, which is supposedly against companies firing employees for their politics. But it looks like in this case, people are supporting firing employees. Do free speech and cancel culture apply only to you, or to everyone? Whatever happened to loving your neighbor after the election, the same happened to fighting for the rights of people to say things you disagree with. I get that it was disrespectful, I 100% agree. It’s the responsibility of other athletes and people to spread that message, rather than the responsibility of people to get Berry kicked from the team. Believe me, if a Chinese athlete did so, many Republicans would call them based, rather than supporting a decision to kick them out. And I know that America and China are very different, and one of the differences is free speech up to the point that citizens can disrespect their country. Kicking Berry off the team will be contradictory to that value of ours and make us look like China. She should be socially shamed to the fullest extent, she’s even worse than Kaepernick. But not kicked off the team. Allowing her to do so also portrays us as a unique and great country which is tolerant of free speech.
And as for the Democrats, right now they probably agree with everything I just wrote. But they are known to have double standards and this illustrates it. They try to cancel Tom Brady or Charles Barkley for a political symbol, but they ignore something which is not even political but just downright disrespectful?
