Gun control is not something to be praised or supported, especially in this sub.
I recently made a post joking about gun control, however, to my surprise, there were multiple upvoted comments on said post that encouraged gun control, one was even using the UK as a prime example on why we need gun control. Let me be clear, when I say gun control is only ever about one thing, and that’s disarming the population. The government does not care about mass shootings, they simply use them as leverage. If the government did care about shootings, they’d actually focus on mental health, as that is a much larger problem, and shootings are simply a symptom of it. In fact, a majority of gun related deaths are suicide, which is very obviously a problem with mental health, not with guns themselves.
Guns exist to eradicate tyranny. This is very clearly stated in the second amendment:
A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
To clarify, this is essentially saying “Because a well kept militia is necessary for the freedom of a state, the right to keep and use weapons will not be violated.” Many will counter this by questioning how every day citizens could possibly take on the U.S. Military. Vietnam and Afghanistan are perfect examples of how an armed populace is able to go toe to toe with an military Empire like the United States. Some assume this is because of the environment that US soldiers were fighting in. This is completely wrong. The reason these backwater countries were able to defeat the U.S. military was because of guerilla warfare. Guerilla warfare is specifically and strategically designed to break the morale of any military, and gives the tactical advantage to the often less experienced and trained citizens, never mind the fact that a military is always a portion of the size of a nation’s total populace, especially within the United States.
The only form of gun control, that is somewhat reasonable, are universal background checks. Licensing is and always will be an infringement. Licensing treats guns as a privilege, and not a right. Licensing happens to work, until the government decides to restrict it more and more, until it get’s to the point where only government officials can get said license. Red flag laws are another common infringement. All it takes, is a co-worker, neighbor, or family member who’s mad or wants to get back at you for “x” incident. They report you to the police, and the police unjustly confiscate your guns. Magazine capacity bans are an infringement as they restrict the ammunition, thus increasing the pressure on a populace or individual in a life/liberty threatening situation. Criminals will always find ways to get guns, or other weapons to do bodily harm. Any real Libertarian will know, that it’s up to us to protect ourselves, and relying on the government will always lead to autocracy.
