We need a proportional representation system in national politics
Under the United States’ current system of electing members of Congress and the President, a third party will never be viable at the national level. The two-party duopoly, is, in my opinion, the single greatest problem America faces. However, it does not have to be this way. Many countries around the world, from Germany, to South Africa, to New Zealand, have all ditched the First Past the Post system in favor of a proportional representation system. Smaller parties regularly win elections in these countries, and even when they don’t command a majority, play in important role in forming coalitions. The voices of smaller groups are regularly heard. If the fight against authoritarianism is to be won, I believe proportional representation should be our number one priority.
