How Capitalism can create ethical rehab-centers (aka prisons), for profit
Libertarians agree on many things about prison: It should be used sparingly, it should be rehabilitative before punitive, and the stays should be much shorter (if a stay is needed at all)
How can we reform criminal justice in this society? Currently, it’s impossible because most Americans focus on punishment. To change the government, we’d need to convince Americans another way is possible.
Thankfully there’s a way to prove the effectiveness of rehab over prison, and show America it’s possible: profit.
Give convicts a choice,
- Regular state prison
- Rehabilitative justice
If they choose the 2nd option, they will be asked to pay their own way. The state will save money, and the rehab center will be motivated by profit to give their customers a shorter and more ethical rehabilitation.
Unfortunately many convicts are poor and will not be able to afford the cost, but as with most new ideas in society, such as air travel, refrigeration, or internet access, it’s exclusively for the rich at first. Once competition hits the market prices will go down until millions of American prisoners, most of them PoC, have been liberated from prison.
The only issue: Convincing Government to get out of the way and give private companies a chance.
