If the Capitol riots were terrorism, why aren’t BLM activities also terrorism?
Please hear me out. I’m truly asking this in good faith and trying to understand. I tried posting this in /r/nostupidquestions but it got autoremoved. I even tried posting it in /r/conservative, and it seems the mods aren’t going to approve in there either.
Oxford defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.”
I’ve heard many people quick to denounce the recent activities at the Capitol as terrorism. I agree it was horrible. At least five people were killed, many injured, and government officials’ lives were put at risk. Government property was also damaged.
But why then haven’t the BLM riots also been denounced as terrorism? Many more people were killed/injured, including more police officers and black business owners (and their property). The Minneapolis police station, among other public and private institutions, were set on fire. There is no shortage of examples. I don’t see how anyone could argue that one is terrorism, but not the other.
I have heard arguments like “BLM is about oppression, and their cause is worthy.” I don’t buy it, because having a cause does not prevent an activity from being terrorism.
“BLM protests have mostly been peaceful.” Maybe, but I’m not talking about the peaceful protests.
“It was only a few bad actors.” I don’t think so. But even if that were true, I could make the same argument about the Capitol activities.
I’m truly open to listening to what you all have to say. I’ve been stuck on this question for days and I can’t get it out of my head. I don’t have any prominent news source or figurehead to give me an unbiased opinion about it. So here I am. Reddit, what do you think?
