An example of how government reduces competition, prevents small businesses, limits consumer options, creates huge hurdles to wealth building, and keeps the poor poorer. There’s no reason a free people can’t repair phones wherever they want, especially if it’s more convenient and cheaper for all.
YouTube Apple repairman Louis Rossmann wants to help people repair their Apple products in a convenient location outside the Apple store in NYC, all while live streaming it for fun. Seems like a no brainier, it would bring in money to small businesses, allow people to save money, and create increased competition. Unfortunately the city makes such ventures impossible, and creates huge hurdles to small businesses for no legitimate reason other than to unfairly protect large businesses:
I recall tossing out the idea last year of having a livestream in front of an Apple store with a mobile repair center where we give on-the-spot, second opinions to people who’ve been to Apple. Unfortunately, this idea was shot down by the city when I asked – even if approved(it was laughed at on the phone the moment I gave my name), it would be over $3k/day for the permit, and very minimal in what we’re allowed to do…. but I got laughed off the phone after they googled my last name.
Given that the license renewal I paid for over six months ago hasn’t even been processed yet with everything closed, I doubt that would be much of an issue at this point. NYC is known for insane bureaucratic inefficiency pre-covid – by the time I rack up a fine for this I’ll be an old man at the rate things are going now.
I think it would be an incredibly fun repair stream. I am kind of sick and tired of doing repair videos at this point(it’s been 8 years of them at this point), but I think this would add infinite amounts of fun to it. They even have a little park-like setup across the street from the one on 14th & 9th ave to sit & set up a camera, microscope, parts bin at. We have a little sign, we ask what the Genius told them, then open the machine and figure out the reality. Maybe some soldering while we’re at it. A portable workstation. All livestreamed for good fun like the repair streams have been since 2016.
Thoughts/suggestions on how to make this idea work and not be a nightmare, would be highly appreciated!
This is just one of the countless ways government limits free enterprise, boosts corporations, and holds back the poor and middle class by creating large artificial barriers to wealth creation.
It’s a god damn shame neither major party would ever support free enterprise, not when corporate friends looking for these protections make up all of their donors.
I honestly don’t think you can truly support the poor/middle class while believing these artificial hurdles are justified.
