Trump Considering Clemency For Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht
I was delighted to read this news. The Silk Road was an amazing example of a free market solution delivering empirically better net societial outcomes than government regulations have.
If you’re not familiar with the Silk Road, it was a website on the “dark web,” meaning you needed Tor to get there, which served as a marketplace for buying and selling illegal drugs. Silk Road had measures in place to ensure trustworthiness with escrow payments and review systems similar to other online marketplaces and the nature of Tor ensured anonymity.
With no criminal record, the feds’ charges still landed Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht two life sentences without parole. It was clear the feds wanted to make an example out of this man for creating something so wildly popular, efficient, profitable, and completely out of the feds’ control in order to discourage others who may want to have a go at this business model. To put the severity of this punishment into context, El Chapo got off easier!
Trump granting clemency here would be a win for liberty and a win for capitalism. There’s a growing political acceptance of the legalization of marijuana, eventually, there will be ‘legitimate’ platforms emerging similar to Silk Road. It makes sense to lessen the punishment to a very successful trailblazer who missed his timing by a few years.
